Are there any safety hazards involved goji?
admin
The Goji berry is a member of the nightshade family, as well as f. ex. the potato, the tomato, the deadly nightshade and the tobacco plant. Plants from this family are often rich in alkaloids and can therefore be toxic, and in some cases even lethal, to humans. The Goji berry does contain atropine, an alkaloid that can be dangerous in large enough doses, but tests of berry samples grown in China and Thailand have shown that the levels are far below the toxic amount. It is possible that dried Goji berries may interact with anticoagulant drugs, that are more commonly known as blood-thinners.
At least one case report has been published in the Annals of Pharmacotherapy, of an older woman that had experienced increased bleeding after drinking large quantities of Goji berry tea. Other than that, there are no studies that indicate any negative effects. It might still be wise not to eat too much of the berries, however, since some of the multitude of vitamins they contain can be less than good for you if consumed excessively.
